An Ancient Art Bharatanatyam Dance

Bharatanatyam is a South Indian classical dance form originating from Tamil Nadu. It is the oldest dance form of India and is said to be over 2000 years old. The form is known for its complex footwork and gestures, as well as its graceful and expressive movements.

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical Indian dances from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This dance form traces its origins back to the temples of Tamil Nadu, where it was performed as a religious offering to the deities. It is characterized by its graceful movements, intricate footwork, and complex hand gestures. The movements of this dance form are based on the Natyasastra, an ancient text on performing arts. It is usually performed to Carnatic music, which is a style of Indian classical music specific to southern India. Bharatanatyam is typically performed by solo dancers, although it can also be performed in a group.

Bharatanatyam is known for its intricate hand gestures (mudras), which are used to tell stories and express emotions. These mudras are believed to be derived from the Hindu gods and goddesses, and each has a different meaning. The dancer also uses facial expressions and body movements to convey the emotion of the story. This dance form is traditionally performed by women, and there are several layers of costumes and jewelry associated with it.

The costume for daily dance practice is usually a cotton Kalakshethra practice saree and for stage performances the dancers wears traditional silk costumes consisting of a blouse, skirt or saree in which the highlight is the fan style pleats that open up when the dancers perform in half seated position called 'Aramandi'.

The jewellery includes necklaces, bangles, and anklets. Bharatanatyam is an integral part of Indian culture and is performed in temples, festivals, and other special occasions. In recent years, it has gained popularity in the West, where it is often performed for entertainment or to preserve its cultural significance.
